Description
A clipped signature of Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), the 17th President of the United States. Evidently this is from an envelope, as the word Free as a "free frank" appears in his hand above the signature. As the franking privilege-- the ability to send mail free of charge-- is enjoyed by Members of Congress, including the Vice-President as President of the Senate, this must date to Johnson's time in the House of Representatives between 1843 and 1853, or during his time as Senator, 1857 to 1862, or in his brief tenure as Vice-President in early 1865. Deeply browned.
