***Auction Highlight*** 1814 Mint Error Crosslet 4 Classic Head 1c Graded au53 BY SEGS. Up for auction is a thoroughly appealing, premium quality example of a challenging large cent type, the 1814. Smooth, glossy, deep copper surfaces are remarkably well preserved with only a few minor, easily overlooked marks scattered about. The strike is 5% off center to the lower obverse and upper reverse, affecting the denticulation in those areas. Otherwise we note bold to sharp definition throughout. Poor planchet stock made the Classic Head cent as a type more susceptible to environmental damage and other impairments during commercial use, with the result that high grade, high quality survivors are difficult to find. Indeed, we anticipate strong competition for this superior AU among both type collectors and early copper enthusiasts.
