Description
Continental, 18th century. Four stunning earthenware wall plates, likely Italian made. The smaller pair are adorned with botanical. motifs and a figure, while the larger show a fish and bird. Both display beautiful enameling. Two have metal fixtures for hanging. All are unsigned. 9.5/10.0" D and the larger measure 17.0" D.
Overall good condition. Small hairline cracks throughout and bubbling in some enameled areas. Both of the larger plates have areas where the ceramic is exposed, as well as paint loss.
Provenance: From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
