Antique 18th century Chinese Cantonese school reverse oil painting on glass depicting the portrait of Michael turner. He is posed standing at right, wearing 18th century costume with right hand tucked in vest andleft hand on hip. Left window open with landscape scene. Verso of work has old labels with the following information: "The Portrait of Michael Turner aged 20 years executed at Canton in China by Old Spoilion. October 9, 1774. Michael Turner Quitted this transitory life October (not legible) 1782 aged 28." "Thomas Thompson carver gilder frame maker no. 11 Fauchamp St. successor to William Wallace needleworkartfully framed, portraits painted, old pictures cleaned and reframed. Looking glass for exportation." Mounted in a period gold leaf wooden frame. Glass panel measures approx. 12 7/8" height x 8 1/2" width tosight. Measures approx. 16 5/8" height x 12 1/8" width overall including frame. Provenance: Acquired from a Park Avenue, New York private collection.
