Newspaper featuring local news of the execution of notorious California bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, noting that he denied committing murder just prior to his hanging. Vasquez, known for robbing stagecoaches, trains, and wealthy ranchers in the mid-late 19th century, became a symbol of resistance against the economic and social changes transforming California at the time.
Despite, or perhaps due to, the widely publicized manhunt leading to his capture and execution, the legend of Tiburcio Vasquez lived on. Vasquez's image began to be rehabilitated during the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, and, among other tributes, a nonprofit health clinic was established and named after him and remains in operation.
