Portobello, Panama, was a naval battle between the Spanish and British during the war of Austrian secession. 1740/ 1743. By Homann Heirs. Nuremberg, Germany. Portobello was an important and strategically located port essential for the transport of gold and silver from the west coast of South America to the awaiting Spanish treasure galleons in the Caribbean. Those galleons would then transport the treasure to Spain. British Captain Vernon came up with a plan to attack Portobello, which he did with six ships in November 1739. The surprise attack was successful, and the Spanish surrendered the port. The British occupied it for three weeks, destroying the fort ‘iron casteil’, shown on this map engulfed in smoke taking fire from the British cannons. Other prominent buildings were destroyed. London’s portobello road is named for this successful British attack, also George Washington’s home, Mt. Vernon is named after the operations commander. A compass rose, water depths location of shoals, rocks, and topographical details all help the viewer understand the unfolding battle shown on the map. A dedication is given to First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Charles Wagner, he was the man who appointed Vernon to the Jamaica command. 11 1/3” x 9”. Hand colored, copperplate engraved. Excellent condition. Authenticity Guaranteed.
