Description
49. SUPER RARE FRENCH PAPER DOLL SET "TAGLIONI" IN ORIGINAL BOX, c. 1835. Featuring Marie Taglioni, the renowned "Dancer on Wings" ballerina of the European Romantic era. Born in 1804 into a well-known Italian dancing family, "no one predicted a brilliant future for her, as she was thin, stoop-shouldered unattractive child, who seemed very uninterested in dancing. " Marie’s father, Philippe Taglioni, a master choreographer, took it upon himself to train his daughter, making her practice six hours a day for six months. When Philippe felt she was ready, he arranged for her debut at Paris Opera. She was an immediate sensation, with her graceful, floating style and her ability to remain on the points of her toes for long periods of time, and she remained the guiding spirit of the Paris Ballet for many decades. The paper doll set highlights costumes from her performances and includes: one 9" double-sided heavy cardboard doll, six double-sided costumes and head dress, original 8" x 10.5" box with embossed gold trim and engraved lid portraying the dancer, the name "Taglioni" and the subtitle "First Dancer of Paris" in three languages. Excellent condition with vibrant costume colors of this very rare set preserved extremely well (box has slight bend/tear on bottom left corner). France, circa 1835. Estimate: $3000-6000
