A VERY RARE ANCIENT ISLAMIC ABBASID MOULDED POTTERY CUP MESOPOTAMIA, CIRCA 9TH/ 10TH CENTURY. Measurement: 12 cm dia, 6 cm high. on a short foot with ring handle and conical thumb piece, moulded with a band of almond shaped medallions foliate motifs.14 cm. diam. Of very rare early islamic ceramic with beautiful design, The form of this cup dates to the Roman period and was the standard form in silver under the Sogdian dynasty. The shape was copied both in ceramic and non-precious metals. For another example of the type, see Oliver Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands. The Al-Sabah Collection, 2004, p. 175, cat. D6.
