Description
AN EXTREMELY RARE & LARGE EARLY ISLAMIC UMAYYAD CALIPHATE GREEN GLAZED MOULDED POTTERY JUG, EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN OR MESOPOTAMIA, CIRCA 8TH-9TH CENTURY. *This vessel belongs to a distinct group of early Islamic ceramics, a few of which have appeared at auction in recent years, including a Similar family Green Jug Sold at Christies for GBP 614,100 (Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2007, lot 50). The group is characterized by a monochrome glaze, often green, and stamped and moulded repeat decoration. They can be dated to the Umayyad or early Abbasid periods on the basis of a number of inscribed pieces (Arthur Lane, Early Islamic Pottery, London, 1947, pl. 3-5). There is also evidence that ceramics of this type were made in Persia & khorasan, based on a bottle with inscription stating that it was made in Gurgan, now in the LA Meyer Memorial Foundation (inv. No. C40.69). Measurement: 29cm high.
