Description
DESCRIPTION: An antique P. Buhre wall clock with matching bracket. Decorated with a dark burgundy and black faux tortoiseshell lacquered finish, and ornamental gilt brass embellishments. The faux tortoiseshell and brass inlaid case is outlined in gilt brass; the center clock face is further embellished with black enamel and brass Roman dial and winding holes. Includes the pendulum, and winding key. The wall clock stands atop a matching support wall bracket with an attached plaque that reads: "P. Buhre". Marked on verso "Swiss Made. 115017". Designed with a frontal hinged door.
Pavel Buhre was one of the first watch companies in Europe. The company was founded by Karl Buhre, a Russian businessman of German descent. At first, the Buhre watch company was located exclusively in St. Petersburg. In 1874, Pavel Buhre, Sr., son of Charles Buhre, purchased a watch factory in Swiss Le Locle. By order of the imperial court, the Buhre factory produced gift watches, which the emperor presented to officials for distinguished public service. In 1899 Pavel Buhre was awarded the title of Official Supplier of the Imperial Court. Pavel Buhre watches were awarded top prizes at many national and international exhibitions, including a silver medal in 1889, and a gold medal in 1900 at the World’s Fairs in Paris.
