North America, United States, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A fine deep mahogany leather hat box with a concave ovoid lid sitting upon a sturdy body that tapers down to a circular base. A lovely leather strap is sewn to one side of the body, wrapping over the lid, through two petite leather loops attached with brass bolts to the other side of the vessel where it clasps into place, thus securing the lid. The base is fixed with four tiny brass legs to prevent it from touching the ground and getting dirty. A graceful double-layered handle with buckles at both ends stretches across the lid and is fastened with two brass latches. The beige-hued felt interior is fit with a central cylinder, a crescent-shaped pad on each side, and a red elastic strap, all functioning to preserve the form of one's cap. Clasp is not functional. Cracking to leather due to age and use, with some small pieces peeling and missing on lid and peripheries of base. Otherwise, intact and very nice with light earthen deposits on interior and lovely patina on buckles.
