South America, Argentina & Uruguay, Pampas region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matching pair of leather riding stirrups likely used by gaucho cowboys. The large discoidal shape is comprised of several thick leather layers riveted together with iron nails that are arranged in a geometric pattern. At the top are thick straps and brass rings for securing to the saddle. Gaucho cowboys were proud of their station and took immense care of their tack, stirrups were symbols of their elite status. These leather stirrups were likely made by the gaucho himself and maintained with regular cleaning - hence the preservation of this pair. Size: 10.5" L x 1" W x 7.5" Diameter (26.7 cm x 2.5 cm x 19 cm)
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s

Condition
Cracking and chipping to leather surfaces. Leather straps are stiff and hard. Heavy patina to leather and iron rivets. Good condition!
