Place Published:
Publisher:
Date Published: c.1930s-1950s
Description:
Lot of 29 Tijuana bibles, mostly featuring comic characters, including: Daddy Warbucks, Hairbreadth Harry, Boots, Mr. Geezil, Gasoline Alley, Sad Sack, Astra: Girl of the Future, Johnny Quick (he's a minute man of course), Woozy Winks, Plastic Man (this one is totally nuts – Plas extrudes his pliable johnson thru one end of a gal and out the other like a human roto-rooter), Blondie, Toots and Casper, Joe Palooka, Moon Mullins, Jiggs, Ella Cinders, etc. Generally Good to VG.
"The Tijuana Bible encompassed the full spectrum of the Sunday funnies, lampooning everyone from fireman (Smokey Stover) to doctor (Rex Morgan, M.D.), from ballplayer (Ozark Ike) to sailor (Popeye), and even from caveman, for that matter (Alley Oop) to those forebears of NASA and Star Wars, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and Brick Bradford... The anonymous creators of the Tijuana Bibles turned the saccharine tradition of the comics on its head, cheerfully savaging every sacred cow in the pasture in their pursuit of satire and sex." – Bob Adelman, Tijuana Bibles: Art and Wit in America's Forbidden Funnies, 1930s-1950s. Simon and Schuster: 1997: p. 12 and jacket flap.
