Chinese Antique Six fold screen with scenes of figures at various pursuits in a village, probably painted for the Western export market in the early 20thc. features a village with wealthy homes by a canal. Villagers, boaters and merchants populate the home, canal and shops. Women can be seen visiting together in open windows and standing in doors. Wooden boats floating on the canal are a visual contrast to the stucco and tile architecture of the village architecture. Probably created in a workshop, the painting is a collaborative effort. Painters contributed their specializations and talents; one painted the architecture; another painted the figures while another contributed the trees and rocks. Tightly painted, the style emphasizes the texture of the silver foil ground. The silver tone will be softly illuminated by the light in the room.
