Item Details
Description
A contemporary ceramic sculpture titled "Demon Girl" by celebrated Detroit artist Glenn Barr. Signed on the bottom right with an annotation of 1/40 and dated 2000. Barr shows his viewers a world of specters and tragic characters living in a seedy universe, drenched in the grit and haze of a post-apocalyptic urban dreamscape. His Detroit work has been labeled Pop Surrealism, Pop Pluralism, Lowbrow, Underground, Regional, Outsider, Ashcan or as he coins the phrase "B Culturalism". Barr finds inspiration in the city streets as well as from pop and counter cultures that infuse a familiarity in his many parallel realities. With a nod to old master painting, pulp art, comics and animation, Barr's paintings are mesmerizing in their narrative complexities and technical depth. Dimensions: 5w x 4.5d x 9.5h. In very good condition. Disclosure: This has been curated from a smoker's estate.Provenance: This item was curated from the estate of Kenneth Robert Stanley (1957-2022) who was a Detroit musician, world traveler, and collector. Per Rick Manore, co-founder of CPOP Gallery, "Ken was a postal worker for over 30 years, Ken's career afforded him the ability to buy and collect art. His apartment was like a small museum of both famous and up-and-coming artists' work. Ken especially collected Detroit artists, many of whom would become household names. Works by Glenn Barr and Niagara would share walls with Mark Ryden and Roy Lichtenstein. His collection of pristine vinyl records and Rock ephemera was eclectic and focused. Ken's book collection was also tuned to his Post-Postmodern taste. This auction is about more than just great art - it is a testimonial to the love and passion for art and music by Kenneth Robert Stanley."
