Description
A rare and historic 19th century oil painting on board depicting a ship at sea marked "37" on the sail by British painter James Webb. Verso annotated "purchased by Geisler Galleries from London Museum 1966." Webb specialized in marine views and atmospheric landscapes. This painting showcases the artist's classic painting style. Webb exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and the British Institute between 1850 and 1888, and many of his works still hang in London in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery. Other works are found in many provincial galleries. Webb was a pupil of Clarkson Frederick Stanfield. From a private collection. Dimensions: 22"h x 29.5"w x 3.5"d (framed). Condition of painting is in good vintage condition with some areas of cracking and varnish discoloration due to age. See photos for reference.
