1864 BROADSIDE PRICE FIXING MERRIMACK COUNTY NEW HAMPSHIRE ATTORNEY FEES. BROADSIDE ANNOUNCES THAT A MEETING OF THE BAR OF THE COUNTY OF MERRIMACK WAS HELD AT CONCORD ON OCTOBER 4TH OF 1864 AND THAT THEY VOTED TO ACCEPT THE “FEE BILL” AS MINIMUM UNIFORM RATES AND CHARGES BY MEMBERS OF THE BAR. FOR EXAMPLE, ALL BAR MEMBERS AGREE TO CHARGE NO LESS THAN $1 FOR WRITING A COLLECTION LETTER…NO LESS THAN $15 FOR ARGUING TO JURY. SIXTEEN DIFFERENT FEES ARE QUOTED. CLERK L.D. STEVENS CLOSES BY STATING, “THE ABOVE CHARGES TO BE THE LEAST THAT SHALL BE TAKEN EXCEPT IN CASES OF POVERTY OR OTHER MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES, RESERVING THE LIBERTY TO MAKE SUCH EXTRA CHARGES AS THE NATURE OF THE CASE AND LABOR PERFORMED MAY JUSTIFY; AND ANY DEPARTURE FROM THIS RULE SHALL BE FOLLOWED BY EXPULSION FROM THE BAR.”
