Stephen Decatur, Jr. was the son of a Revolutionary War naval captain of the same name, Stephen Decatur, Sr. (1751-1808). Decatur, Jr. rapidly rose through the ranks of the U.S. Navy to become one of its first unadulterated heroes. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1798 as a midshipman. Then followed promotions to lieutenant in 1799, captain in 1804, and commodore in 1807. Decatur, Jr. distinguished himself during the Quasi-War with France, the Barbary Wars, and the War of 1812. He was killed in a duel against Commodore James Barron in March 1820, dying of his wounds at age 41.
