Aviation Broadside Signed by Earle Ovington, Beautifully Visual!
An eye-catching broadside featuring an article entitled "The Airmail Comes of Age", reprinted from the October issue of EveryWeek Magazine and signed "Earle Ovington" in top right corner with personal seal declaring him the "First U.S. Air Mail Pilot" below, dated October 11, 1931, Santa Barbara, CA. The article details how Ovington came to receive this title, with the publication's layout highlighted by several depictions of the pilot, his plane, and the historic flight which took place on September 23, 1911. Excepted degrees of flattened folds, minor creasing to outside edges, and soiling in places. Overall good condition- an interesting piece of aviation history. Measuring 15.75" x 21.75"
Earle Lewis Ovington (1879-1936) was an American aviator and aeronautical engineer who would get his start working as a messenger boy for Thomas Edison at the age of 16. Later in 1911, he would famously pilot the first official airmail flight in the United States in a Blériot XI, carrying a sack of mail from Garden City, NY to Mineola, NY. Ovington was subsequently sworn in as “First Aeroplane Mail Carrier” by Postmaster General Frank H. Hitchcock that same day.
