Description
Two Blue John or Derbyshire fluorspar obelisks, Two Blue John or Derbyshire fluorspar obelisks, 19th century, possibly Cliff Blue Vein, of tapering form, each raised on a square base bordered by white marble and black stone, restoration, larger 38.5cm high smaller 28cm high (2) Provenance: The collection of Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon, 5 Belgrave Square, London; thence by descent. The black stone is possibly Ashford marble, the name given to a limestone mined near the village of Ashford-in-the-Water, Derbyshire, England. Condition Report: Larger - Broken in two places through the obelisk and repaired, several chips and losses to the stone, loss to the tip, scratches. Loss to one corner of the marble and several other nibbles/scratches. Smaller - Has probably been cut down. Chips and scratches to the obelisk with some infill. Repairs to the black stone plinths both middle and base sections. Chips and nibbles to the marble sections. The obelisk doesn't sit centrally on the bottom black stone plinth.
