Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, Mesolithic to Neolithic period, 10,000 to 5,000 years ago. A fascinating tool made from a large piece of deer antler, the surface close to the tine tip is angled and smooth from shaping into a blade for use as a chisel or scraper. The size of this antler suggests an elk or caribou, and the nearly stone like texture of the antler indicates great age. It takes approximately 10,000 years for bone and antler to fossilize - it is probable this piece dates to the Mesolithic period. Before metal technology, stone, animal bones and antlers – were the primary materials used as tools. Sharpened tines were well suited for pointed spears, scrapers, or digging picks and could be attached to a wooden handle for greater leverage. Size: 9.65" L x 1.5" W (24.5 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Englewood, Colorado USA collection
