An extraordinary level of handwork and precision is required to produce the unique 'Uchiwa'-fans made of bamboo cane and rice paper. For this purpose, Ingo Maurer hired up to 21 workers from Japan in the 1970s, who had lost their jobs as a result of the chemical pollution of Marugame Bay. The undertaking paid off and the project became a great success. To this day, these rare luminaires provide a uniquely atmospheric spatial experience thanks to their warm illumination effect and effortless floating appearance.
