Description
PASTERNAK BORIS: (1890-1960) Russian poet and novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1958. A good A.L.S., Boris Pasternak, in Cyrillic, four pages, folio, n.p., 29th June 1945, to Sergei Durylin, in Cyrillic. The first page, penned on an official printed form, is dedicated to a number of manuscript lines from Pasternak's long poem Spectorsky, with an annotation in the writer's hand at the foot noting that the lines represent new amendments to be made to the eighth chapter. Pasternak's letter, most likely his retained draft copy, then commences to the plain verso of the printed page and continues on two adjoined plain pages, writing, in part, 'If there is even a grain of truth in everything……that has been said, then it is [true] only in that it completely and undeniably coincides……with its historic infinity. How can this very carelessness be a part, and even such an insignificant whole…..which was so tragically but not narcissistically disentangled……the literary revolution is more strongly dissolved by us and divided by us…..You can taste it from my discussion……You can be calm. I am not the only one who believes in this truth in general. Believe precisely in these truths, it is precisely from this that a note of patriotism is formed, a modest confidence in one's inviolability grows. There were a lot of deceptive, indefinite things in the former troubles of the recent past. It's another matter if in this work of mine….it hurts that the area of external expression of everything exhausts it……The technical conditions did not see any internal discord, although they are present in writing…..Now, their respectful basis of poetry……is simple literature…..and especially poems passed through an inflamed soul which was not previously broken on the way……Please note that here I sometimes write most of the time with my left hand……Do not pay much attention to this and do not draw many….conclusions from this problem. I told Chagin all this. He was simply in awe. They are going to conclude a contract with me in August, so everything must be prepared by the end of the year'. A letter of interesting content written shortly after the end of the war on the Eastern Front (German-Soviet War) during World War II. A few minor, light stains and some light overall creasing, about VG Sergei Durylin (1886-1954) Russian editor and literary critic, a friend of Pasternak, Tolstoy and other Russian writers.
