Description
FAULKNER WILLIAM: (1897-1962) American writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1949. D.S., William Faulkner, one page, 4to, n.p. (Los Angeles, California), 16th August 1943. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, states, in part, 'I, William Faulkner, hereby certify that I wrote, created and composed and/or collaborated in the writing…..of the screen play entitled ''De Gaulle Story'' and/or ''Free French'' based on the life of Charles De Gaulle and the Free French movement and the original dialogue used therein, as an employee of Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc., pursuant to an agreement of employment dated July 27, 1942, in performance of my duties thereunder and in the regular course of my employment; and that said Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. is the author and entitled to the copyright and all other rights…..' Countersigned at the foot by a Notary Public alongside their blind embossed seal. Rare. One small file hole to the upper left corner, a small minor tear to the right edge, and some very minor, light creasing, otherwise VG It was American President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had originally mooted the idea of a glorifying biopic of Charles de Gaulle and the Free French to Jack Warner, as he wanted to bolster de Gaulle's reputation. Warner passed the concept off to Faulkner the day that the writer arrived at the Warner Bros. studios. Unfortunately, Faulkner got caught up in an arduous series of edits on The De Gaulle Story (1942) in an effort to please de Gaulle's Hollywood consultant, Henri Diamant-Berger, who went to lengths to point out the script's flaws and inaccuracies in regard to French custom and the heroism of de Gaulle. When Faulkner had completed the script to Diamant-Berger's liking, the studio made the decision to shelve the project.
