Roosevelt who had originally mooted the idea of a glorifying biopic of Charles de Gaulle and the Free French to Jack Warner, as he wanted to bolster de Gaulle's reputation. Warner passed the concept off to Faulkner the day that the writer arrived at the Warner Bros. studios. Unfortunately, Faulkner got caught up in an arduous series of edits on The De Gaulle Story (1942) in an effort to please de Gaulle's Hollywood consultant, Henri Diamant-Berger, who went to lengths to point out the script's flaws and inaccuracies in regard to French custom and the heroism of de Gaulle. When Faulkner had completed the script to Diamant-Berger's liking, the studio made the decision to shelve the project.
