Featured in this lot is this 19th century Katipunan era Filipino Luzon Bolo sword from Luzon, Philippines. This Philippine Katipunan-era bolo is commonly referred to as "Luzon Matulis" i.e., pointed (blade) of Luzon and features a hardwood handle, a steel D-guard in a snake style, sometimes referred to as nagá, and a large steel ferrule to help prevent splitting or cracking in the handle. The blade is in the bolo style, which is a general term for traditional pre-colonial, small to medium sized single-edged swords or large knives of the Philippines that function as both tools and weapons. They are characterized by a wide blade that narrows towards the hilt, with pointed or blunt tips. Bolos are a common tool in the Philippines and are often compared to the machete. The blade and d-guard feature a nice patina from its vintage age with the blade showing pitting and some slight cracking. On the ricasso of the blade there is an inscribed "30". The hardwood handle shows some chipping on one side of the handle but is still intact and stable. Overall the blade shows good condition for its vintage age and would make a fine and interesting piece to any collection. The sword measures 29" L x 4 1/4" W at the hilt. The blade measures 24 1/2" L.
