Second Edition, Revised and Corrected. Charles Davies became Professor of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy (USMA) West Point in 1823, as the reformed Academy under Sylvanus Thayer experienced difficulties in educating cadets in engineering due to insufficient mathematical instruction (using French-language textbooks), and Davies saw his mission to create a full series of American mathematics textbooks. Davies also revised Jared Mansfield's surveying text, and the Mansfield-Davies method was used to survey US public lands. Davies left West Point in 1837 to focus on his textbooks. "For the next forty years, Davies was one of the most prolific and successful authors of educational books in America. He wrote mathematics text-books for grammar school, high school and college education. In all, Davies prepared more than twenty different volumes on the subject of mathematical education. His works were always distinguished by plainness and close logical arrangement." "It was during Davies time as the Head of the Department of Mathematics that calculus was taught to all cadets and later used in the development of the science and engineering courses." Second A S Barnes edition, published just two years after Davies began his successful relationship with Barnes to publish his series of textbooks. The Calculus textbook remained popular through the 19th-century and went through 16 editions.
