Her first husband was Rafael Buber, communist son of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber; her second partner was Heinz Neumann, a leading KPD member, Comintern member, editor in chief of the KPD newspaper Die Rote Fahne and a member of the Reichstag. Martin Buber and his wife raised Margarete and Rafael's two daughters in Palestine.
