Description
Royal Vienna Style Porcelain Covered Baluster Handled Urn, late 19th c., of tapering baluster form with a central hand painted continuous band of classical figures and a chariot in the clouds on one side and female classical figures pulling a chariot with a seated putto within on the other side, with gilt enameled decoration overall on a magenta ground, to a socle support on an integral circular foot, on a square porcelain plinth with gilt gryphon and animal reserves, on a sloping gilt decorated base, both with blue underglaze beehive/shield marks, Urn- H.- 17 1/2 in., Dia.- 7 1/2 in., Plinth- H.- 3 in., W.- 7 in., D.- 7 in., Total H.- 20 1/2 in.
Condition
The lid has broken into pieces and has been professionally restored. The base has split into two and has been professionally restored as well. There are areas of wear to the gilt surface, especially along the corners of the base and on top of one of the urn handles. The screw securing the stem to the vase has some rust. There is one ship to a corner of the base of the urn. Wear is consistent with age and use.
