Antique/Vintage Ceramic Mask of Face & Lizard
Tall- 7 1/4"
Wide- 7"
Deep- 3 1/4"
Eleuterio Ortega Hernandez is grandfather to the Ortega family from Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco, Mexico.
While he and his wife worked in the fields in the planting and harvesting seasons, they used their spare time engaged in developing their art.
Eleuterio made elaborate Tastoan dance masks (Dance of the Spanish conquest of Mexico). also began to design more surreal figures. He took his clay from mines in Tonalá as does Gerardo, his son, today. The large chunks of earth are pulvarized and then mixed with a harder clay called liga.
The Ortega family is known for Barro Betus pottery.
This antique mask is rare and is a museum quality piece
This decorative face can be either hung on the wall or placed on a table.
The face is hand painted and hand formed.
Gorgeous yellow and other bright colors have been painted the face.
It is a wonderful piece of Mexican folk art.
