Description
Probably Tibetan, 19th century or earlier, gouache on cloth. Central seated figure holding a conch shell and surrounded by mountains with demons below. Line of text at bottom. Back has inked urn with eyes and text below. Silk and brocade border and wooden rods on either end, top rod has leather ends and inked bamboo plaque, the other has silver dovetailed ends. Covered with mottled polychrome silk panel. Wear, some creases, silk has tears. Image 26"h. 17.5"w., 51.5"h. 31.25"w. overall.
Condition
Overall areas of wear and creases but more are towards the lower third. No tears or holes but paint loss and wear to cloth, light shines through these areas. Some figures have gold text underneath them. Back has stains, some look like water stains, some look like residue (drips) that have covered small parts of the drawing on the back. Silk covering has several tears. Gauze type cloth is sewn onto the back covering the brocade borders and tiny bit of thangka edge.
