Item Details
Description
Metal serving spoon marked Ohio on back handle top. Steamship Ohio was owned by George Law of US Mail Steamship Co. which also owned the Central America. Ohio sailed between New York, New Orleans and Latin America. In 1847 Ohio was likely launched and worked the US East Coast. 1848 sailed from New York to Vera Cruz and Latin America. In February, 1850 she was seized in New Orleans for unpaid bills. In 1850 she sailed from New York to New Orleans only. On April 6, 1851, there was $480,000 in specie headed to New Orleans from Latin America. In 1854 MO Roberts was the agent in New York, same as for the Central America. SSCA purser Ed Hull was the purser for the Ohio during parts of 1851-1852, and may have saved this spoon for continued use on the Central America. 8.5x1.75".Provenance: SS Central America Collection
