Item Details
Description
  • Title: Chokwe comb - Angola - African Art Tribal Art
  • Description: Among the prestige objects of African Chokwe art, the combs ( cisakulo , chisakulo ) are embellished with a wide variety of decorative motifs and tribal carvings, the arrangement and number of geometric incisions on the flat part further conveying coded messages. This example of primitive art is accompanied by a head reminiscent of the Chokwe Pwo tribal mask. The characteristic motifs present on the forehead, and sometimes on the cheekbones, are part of the chokwe aesthetic canons but also served as public markers of ethnic identity. The recurring cruciform frontal motif is also thought to carry cosmogonic significance. Mahogany brown lustrous patina. This example is topped with a large shell worn forward, following the fashion of the time. These masks were mainly worn during initiation ceremonies of passage to adulthood, marking among other things the end of the privileged bond between a son and his mother. The stylized tears sublimate the mixture of pride and sadness that resulted. Today they are worn during pagan festivities and at political or social gatherings. The Chokwe Pwo masks are exclusively female representations in African tribal art, intended for the worship of female ancestors . Indeed, Chokwe society is organized in a matrilineal fashion. Joined to their male counterparts, Cihongo recognizable by their large tray-shaped headdress, the Pwo are meant to bring fertility and prosperity to the community, and are used, accompanied by a costume and accessories, during the mukanda , the initiation of young boys.
