Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful bronze brooch, nicely preserved and with a pretty patina, bearing a dramatic openwork sun wheel motif on its face. The sun wheel was an ancient symbol, relating to the idea of a wheeled chariot pulling the sun across the sky, and is often associated with more Celtic-dominated areas of Roman rule like the British Isles and northern France. Size: 1.1" W x 1.8" H (2.8 cm x 4.6 cm)
Provenance: private Tennessee, USA collection; ex-private German collection, before 2000

Rich patina which has been partially cleaned away, though much remains. Pin still has slight movement but cannot be closed. Form well preserved.
