Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Egypt, Coptic culture, 5th to 8th century CE. A hand-carved ungulate or bovine bone idol of an abstract standing figure for use as a pendant or talisman, the shoulders are pierced laterally either for suspension or attaching articulated arms. The schematic details - broad hips and narrow waist - suggest a female figure. It is likely that such bone dolls would have been clothed in textiles or even given wool or human hair coiffures, attached via clay or pitch to lend a more lifelike appearance. The purpose of these dolls remains ambiguous, but perhaps the women figures served as fertility or protective amulets. Size: 1.125" W x 3.75" H (2.9 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private West Hollywood, California, USA collection; ex-Lin Emery (1926-2021) collection, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired prior to 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
