Description
A monumental size very RARE and desirable stamped Catawba valley jug. Stamped IL with a kiln pop over the i. Very fat and bulbous when water tested holds over 5.5 gallons possibly made as a 6 gallon jug! Isaac Lefever is very special to the southern pottery tradition because he apprenticed under the Godfather of the Catawba Valley Pottery - Daniel Seagle. Isaac Lefever was no doubt just as talented at Daniel Seagle but was took in battle during the civil war ca. 1864. A tremendous, rare size for such a great example of southern signed pottery. Isaac Lefever fought for the confederacy and died in the civil war making his signed pieces very rare. 17.5"h x 12"w CONDITION REPORT - in as fired condition, no repairs or restoration of any kind. all original. no cracks or brakes. some age scuffs as expected around rim. see photos this is a magnificent jug!
