FLETCHER MARTIN (1904-1979)Lullaby. Lithograph on paper, 1942. 201x304 mm; 7x11 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower margin. Martin's most celebrated imagery are his depictions of athletes. This print, with simplified forms, conveys the dynamic energy of our competitive spirit as individuals, and as a nation. The New Deal programs encouraged individual drive and ingenuity. In the early 1940s Fletcher Martin created three friezes for the facade of the Boundary County Corthouse, Bonners Ferry, ID under the Federal Arts Project, Works Progress Administration, (FAP, WPA). He also completed mural projects for post offices is Lamesa, TX, Kellogg, ID, and San Pedro, CA, all funded by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, (TSFA).
