Description
Pair of tondos; PETER IPSEN (Copenhagen, 1815-1860).
Terracotta.
Marks on the reverse.
Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid.
Measurements: 22 cm (diameter, x2).
Pair of tondos made in terracotta that present scenes inspired by classical antiquity in relief. The pieces are stamped with the mark of Peter Ipsens Enke, a pottery manufacturer founded in 1843 and continued by his widow Louise Ipsen and his son Berthel Ipsen after his death in 1860. Peter Ipsen was apprenticed to a carpenter in his home town, but left as a result of ill health to become an apprentice at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in 1833. He remained at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory after completing his apprenticeship six years later.
He achieved international success with his replicas of ancient Greek and Roman pottery, won prizes at international exhibitions and opened his own shops in Paris and London. After the turn of the century, he collaborated with artists such as Thorvald Bindesbøll, WillumsenJ. Ipsens Enke's works are represented in the collections of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the National Museum in Stockholm, the Los Angeles Museum, the Cleveland Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen, Les Amis des Musees de la ville de Mons in Brussels, the National Arts Club in New York and the National Museum of Latvia in Riga.
