Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Moche to Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 650 to 1000 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar of relatively spherical form with an expressive frontal portrait of Ai Apec, the principal deity of the Mochica people. The portrait features a large rectangular head with intimidating eyes and bared teeth, red-orange pigment, and a trophy head pendant beneath. Additional stripes line the exterior of both body and rim. A unique depiction of Ai Apec during a cultural transition period! Size: 9" W x 9.25" H (22.9 cm x 23.5 cm)

Condition
Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and fading to original pigment commensurate with age. Petite felt pads beneath base for stability purposes. Nice depiction of Ai Apec!
