Description
Yuncu Rug, Turkey, 18th C., 3'6'' x 3'5'' (107 x 104 cm). Weight: 5 lbs. Material: wool pile, wool warp, wool weft. Of smaller size and square proportions, this weaving was likely made as a "minder", which is a floor cushion cover. It is a bit larger than a yastik cushion cover that would be placed along the back of a sedir or along a wall. The deep saturated natural dyes are typical of this region and incorporate a deep green, and small amounts of yellow. The rows of concentric diamonds with latch-hooks are difficult to weave accurately but these are masterfully executed. Old faded reweaves are a testament to its age and revered value to many generations of previous owners.
