Description
[CIVIL RIGHTS]. The Poor People's Campaign: [a Photographic Journal]. Atlanta, GA: The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1968.
Oblong 8vo (11 x 8 1/8 in.). Photographic illustrations. (Evenly toned.) Original illustrated wrappers (crease to front wrapper, minor staining, toned).  FIRST EDITION "photographic journal of the Poor People's Campaign, from early 1968, prior to Dr. King's assassination on April 4, to the end of the Washington D.C., summer action phase." The Campaign was founded by Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to create an avenue for poor people to directly confront American politicians to alleviate poverty regardless of race. After Dr. King's assassination, the SCLC convened and resolved to continue the campaign with Ralph Abernathy taking over leadership. The diverse participants formed a protest camp on the Washington Mall for 6 weeks in the spring of 1968. The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, a key ally of the Campaign, led to the closure of the tent city by 19 June 1968. RARE: online records indicate no copies sold at auction.
