Two novels by Herman Whitaker signed/inscribed to his daughter, Elsie Whitaker Martinez, another signed, one with dedication/drawing by Xavier Martinez, and three others having various family inscriptions; most first editions. Condition: Mostly Fair-Good, a few Poor-Fair; loose, dampstaining, wear/scuffing, ends of spines/corners/edges bumped and frayed, some with internal splitting. WHITAKER, HERMAN. 1867-1919. 1.) Cross Trails, The Story of One Woman in the North Woods. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1914. Signed by author on title page. 2.) Hunting the German Shark, the American Navy in the Underseas War. New York: The Century Co., 1918. Photographic illustrations. With dedication on flyleaf from "Pal" (Harriet Dean) to "Pellie" (Elsie Whitaker Martinez), New York, 1923; and with Elsie's signature. 3.) The Mystery of the Barranca. New York & London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1913. With a presentation inscription and drawing on front pastedown by Xavier Martinez, to his daughter Micaela, dated 1928. 4.) Over the Border, a Novel. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1917. Inscribed by author on flyleaf: "To Elsie, with love from: Her father, Piedmont, Cal. July 1917". 5.) The Planter, A Novel. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1909. Signed and inscribed by author on title page, with "Piedmont Cal., March 1909", and other later Whitaker family inscriptions. 6.) The Probationer and Other Stories. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1905. Elsie Whitaker Martinez inscription and Piedmont address on pastedown, dated 1926; and bookplate remnant. Front and back gutters totally split but covers still attached. 7.) The Settler, A Novel. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1907 (first published in 1906). Inscribed by author on title page: "To Elsie, my collaboratair [?], with love, from Herman Whitaker", and inscription by Elsie on flyleaf, and at back. Considerable condition issues: splitting/spine totally detached; large dampstains that extend all the way through. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
