Antique Victorian 1870s Derby Company Tea Pot Quadruple Silver Plated
Item Details
Description
Antique Victorian tea or coffee pot with hinged lid, decorated with repousse and engraved floral designs, quadruple silver plated with a base metal appearing as an old silver, designed and created by the Derby Silver Company. The mark applied on the bottom was used in the 1870s-1880s. [Reference: "The Derby Silver Company" Connecticut History / a CTHumanities Project]

The pot is 6" [15.2cm] tall including the top of the lid; c.6" [15.2cm] wide including handle; c.4" [10.2cm] across at the widest point; the silver plating is mostly gone, the base material appears as an old silver, the patina and wear / scratches matching the age [see photos]; very good condition.

The Derby Silver Company was founded in 1872 and began operations one year later. Showrooms were established in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. A considerable amount of silver was shipped to South America. The logo at the time featured an anchor, often with the words "Derby Silver Company" or its initials surrounding it.

In 1898, the plant merged with the International Silver Company, a consortium of Connecticut silver companies. At that time the Derby Silver Company works was known as Factory B. Thus, as a rule of thumb, items with the Derby Silver Company logo most likely date from the 19th century, while items with the International Silver Company logo, either Derby or Factory B, are from the 20th. A victim of the Depression, the plant closed in 1933.
