Description
Vintage "Bald Eagle", handmade and hand painted porcelain bookend designed by Otagiri, San Francisco, handmade in Japan, 1960s-1970s. The original pre-OMC paper foil sticker is present. [OMC trademark sticker was introduced in 1980].

Hand painted glazed porcelain with velvet-like material on the bottom; measures approx. 6" tall, 5" wide, 4.5" deep [15.2cm x 12.7cm x 11.5cm], no chips, no cracks, no hairlines, near fine condition.

Otagiri Mercantile Company, with headquarters in San Francisco, was an American company that manufactured their ceramics in Japan. The Company started production in the 1950s and existed until 1994. Otagiri registerd the 'OMC' [Otagiri Mercantile Company] in 1980, prior to this the ceramics were copyright under 'Otagiri' trademark. Designed by Otagiri in San Francisco, the ceramics were produced in Japan.

Otagiri family are Americans of Japanese heritage. They were incarcerated in the Topaz (Central Utah) concentration camp during World War II. After their release, they moved to Boulder, Colorado, where Goro Otagiri worked as a Japanese teacher for the Navy. The Otagiris moved back to the Bay Area in 1946 and started the Otagiri Mercantile Company in the early 1950s.

The company hired talented artisans to design its products. Among the artists who designed products for Otagiri were Kurt R. Kress, Bob Harrison, Angela Ackerman, Wendy Morgan, Curtis-Swan, Tracy Flickinger, Tom Taylor, Linda Pickens, Mary Hughes, and Mary Ann Baker.

Another porcelain company specialized on Japan imports, Enesco, purchased the Otagiri Mercantile Co [OMC] in 1994 and discontinued production under OMC trademark.
