Description
A 1938 Soviet propaganda poster depicting the sinking of the steamship Chelyuskin. Inscription in Russian in the lower left: Chelyuskintsy, meaning the crew members. Published in Azerbaijan. Technical inscriptions in Azerbaijani on the bottom. Chelyuskin was a Soviet steamship, reinforced to navigate through polar ice in 1933, that became ice-bound in Arctic waters during navigation along the Northern Maritime Route and sank. The people on board were rescued by air. The catastrophe inspired many works of art, and its memory is preserved in the topography of many cities of the former Soviet Union.
