Item Details
Description
Attributed to Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey (1781-1842): A carved white marble bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)
the sitter looking slightly to sinister, his shoulders clad in drapery, the rear with weathered signature Chantery Sculpt***, on circular socle base, the surface with some weathering, 71cm high, 52cm wide, 26cm deep approximately.
Footnotes:
Chantrey became the leading society portrait sculptor in Regency England producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time including statues of King George III, George IV and George Washington. He also executed four monuments to military heroes for St Paul's Cathedral, London and left the Chantrey Bequest (or Fund) for the purchase of works of art for the nation.

The first marble bust of the Duke of Wellington was carved for the Earl of Liverpool although Chantrey later went on to produce versions for both the sitter and the King amongst others Although this idealized portrait of Wellington executed after his victory at Wellington is carved in the classical mode (al'antica), with bared neck and blank eyes, the inclusion of the military hero's dramatic profile suggests the influence of the emerging romantic movement.
