Description
1922ed of 1494 Christopher Columbus Letter Insulis Inventis AMERICA Voyages RARE
Few names are as synonymous with New World exploration as Christopher Columbus. In fact, much of what we know of Columbus and his discoveries is from his first-hand accounts and letters such as “De Insulis Indiae supra Gangem nuper inventis”. In this letter, Columbus describes, as the title suggests “the islands of India beyond the Ganges, recently discovered”. It wasnt until much later that Columbus and crew realized they werent in India at all.
This letter was published all over Europe in the year following Columbuss discovery – published in Rome, Basel, Paris, Antwerp, and so on. The Basel edition, which was second only to the Rome edition, differed only slightly in that it did not include Indie supra Gagnem, otherwise it was the same printing as the Rome.
This 1922 facsimile reissue of the 1494 Basel edition was collected and edited by Ernst Weil, published in Munich numbered no. 398 of 1500. Very rare!
