Description
1895 1ed Free Silver and Gold Standard Currency Coins Numismatics William Jennings Bryan
A rare salesmans sample for the first edition printing of the historical and political treatise, Silver and Gold. Collectively written by a variety of authors and edited by Trumbull White, this work was meant to inform the American public about the, then controversial, debate concerning economic policy and the expansion of the US money supply via “free silver” versus adopting the “gold standard.”
At the turn of 19th-century the US was reeling from an economic depression known as the “Panic of 1893” that consequently pushed the subject to the front of US politics and is the root of the famous “Cross of Gold” speech given by Democratic presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan. Following the 1896 elections, the US public would ultimately vote to adopt the gold standard.
