Description
1869 Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert French Literature Realism SCANDAL Affairs
“Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.”
― Gustave Flaubert
Gustave Flaubert was a 19th-century French novelist. He was often considered the leading advocate of literary realism in French. His most famous novel, Madame Bovary, was also his debut work, but upon its release, “the government accused Flaubert of obscenity. The trial, and Flauberts acquittal, heightened interest in the story upon its release in book form in 1857.” This rare 1869 edition is beautifully bound – an impressive display with marbled blue boards and stamped leather.
