Description
1856 Pacific Exploration INDIANS Native Rituals Cherokee Hueco Illustrated Dress
Beginning in 1855, the United States Congress published reports and surveys of certain railroad routes from the Mississippi River westward to the Pacific. This volume from “Reports of Explorations and Surveys” covers the routes through California, particularly those from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Note the impressive collection of illustrations – landscape views, churches, fossils and plants, Indian tribes, and geological plans.
Per Larned,
“Narrative reports of many officers on various routes, giving much information concerning the western country. The publication of the reports being chiefly in the form of original journals, kept day by day, gives them a certain accuracy that might have been lost had the writers more frequently indulged in general descriptions.
This work includes fascinating engraved plates including 21 color lithographs! In addition to the illustrations, this volume covers A.W. Whipples report from the 35th Parallel on the Mississippi River and the Corps of Engineers. Though perhaps the most important inclusion in this volume is Whipples report about Native American Indian tribes. The list of contents is extensive, however, Whipple describes:
Indian residences, homes, teepees, dwellings
Descriptions and illustrations of dress and costume
Reports on the numbers of Indians throughout the 35th-Parallel
Condition of aboriginal tribes in New Mexico
Notes on the Apache nation, Mojave tribes, Cherokees, Pueblos, Choctaws, Navajos, Hueco tribes, and many others.
List of North American languages, vocabularies, and Indian dialects
Indian pagan rituals, religious ceremonies, spirit dances, Indian cave drawings
