Description
Grand Tour Era Wood Carving, a representation of the controversial Swiss sandstone monument in Lucerne honoring the sacrifice of Swiss Guards defending the King of France during the French Revolution; the sculpture depicts a dying lion impaled with a spear, with its paw resting on a shield with the French fleur de lys, with the carved words "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" (to the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss) and the Roman numeral date of 1792 below; with a partially legible "Lucerne" paper label affixed to the base, 3 1/4" high, 7 5/8" x 2 5/8". Surface wear.
